Today Carlton has a post box (on Brinkley road, opposite Hillcroft) and a postman in a van comes and picks up the mail.

In the past carriers from Carlton took the post to either Newmarket, or Cambridge or Haverhill.

At different times in the past the post was left at the pub (the Axe and Saw) or one of the houses acting as the post office, the table below summarises the entries from the Kelly's directories, with other notes from the census, etc.

1847 Axe & Saw - William Quy.

William was 49 in 1847, and was still the postmaster by the 1861 census, but no longer at the Axe &  Saw.

1864 Post Office - Mrs Harriet Quy, receiver. Letters arrive from Newmarket at 7.25 a.m. ; dispatched at 7.30 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Newmarket.

Harriet was 75 years old in 1864, she was buried four years later (aged 79) in November 1868, with her abode given as Brinkley (Norney). In 1864 her husband, the previous post master, was still alive - he was buried in March 1867 at the age of 78.
